Some people have argued that Cloud is really a cheap rip-off of Terra, ex-soldier with memory problems.

I don’t buy it, but Terra certainly seems to be the start of the amnesia/scrambled memories tradition that continues for the next several games. (Although I suppose that Sarisa/Faris was a bit forgetful of her past, too, but in that case she was just forgetting her childhood.)
